Technical Information

We are currently using the following equipment:

EOS Rebel G: a good all around "analog" or film camera. Most of the Australia images were taken with this camera due to the cost, at the time, of compactflash cards...later they were scanned with a Canon Canoscan LiDE 30.

Nikon CoolPix 880: bought around the turn of the century and we used it extensively until about four years ago...of course this required a lot of tweaking of the images in Adobe Photoshop and GIMP.

EOS Digital SLR Rebel: 6.3 megapixels of pure shooting...This camera is nearly perfect in every way. All of the recent images were shot with this camera. We use the raw settings mostly and run DCE or IrfanView to resize the images for posting.

Favorite Software Tools

Adobe Photoshop CS: New and improved...works wonders for us when we need to tweak levels, color, curves etc...haven't used it much with the new Digital Rebel.

Irfanview 3.98: An awesome freeware utility for viewing, performing minor tweaks, creating slideshows, batch renaming and batch resizing...We use it daily!

DCE AutoEnhance: Recommended to us by our friends at the Dark Isle (Check it out for awesome images from Ireland and Scotland). We use this for some batch renaming and resizing along with batch tweaking...not too bad for $35.

Canon Photostich: Not bad for a free photostiching program...sorry, it came with the camera.

ALL Topo Maps: New Mexico Edition.

Garmin GPS Mapsource: USA Edition, in conjuction with the Garmin: ETrex Legend...the official GPS of the Raging Main.

GIMP 2.3.4: We have had unbelievable success using GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)...we like it better than Photoshop...and it's free! Nice filters too!

Dreamweaver MX 2004: This site is frustratingly done in Dreamweaver.

OpenOffice 1.1.4: A nice suite that is compatible with MS Office...FREE! It even exports to PDF!

Imagery: Some imagery is from the Terrasever...satellite and aerial photos were later stitched using the Big JPEG plugin for USAPhotoMaps 2.75...FREE! THANKS JDMCox!
