| City of Rocks |
 |
About thiry miles north of Deming New Mexico and thirty million years ago a nearby volcano erupted tiny particles of very hot rock. Instead of rising into the air, they flowed from the lip of the volcano. When the flow came to rest the particles fused together to form the solid rocks seen in the images below. Geologically speaking, these rocks are known as "welded tuff." The tuff was later covered by other volcanic material, but erosion acting through many thousands of years uncovered the tuff and attacked the surface. Because of the tuff's structure and composition the exposed surface was scaled off. Wind and water have carried off the resulting debris, leaving these monolithic forms... known as the City of Rocks. These types of formations are known to exist in only six other places in the world.
