| Bishop's Cap |
 |
Heading up the Mossman Arroyo between the Organ Mountains and Bishop's Cap is a secluded mountain bike trail and a "forest" of Yucca. Hang a right turn, engage the 4WD and head to the southern and east side of Bishop's Cap...we are looking for Conkling's Cave!
Fluorspar mines, adits and prospects cover the hills around Bishop's Cap. In these images you will see the remains of such mines as the Brick/Shale Prospect, Blue Star Prospect, as well as parts of the Grant Prospect (Bishop Cap Prospect) such as the Hebert Mine and Cave Mine. At one time Cave Mine was inhabited by a hermit but he was evicted by the BLM some time ago.
Fluorite, along with barite, calcite and cryptocrystalline quartz was discovered in narrow veins and shallow test pits in the Bishop Cap Hills around the early 1900's. Reportedly, minor amounts of pyrite, hematite, galena, azurite and malachite and some unidentified uranium minerals can also be found in the Bishop Cap Hills area. Allied Chemical Corporation drilled several percussion holes on the east side of Bishop's Cap around 1975. Composite samples from Grant's Prospect in 1945 contained 47.5% CaF2, 23.5% SiO2, 14.9% CaCO3 and 11.1% BaSO4. (Hits: 1996)
